Newcomers with limited English often need assistance to navigate community systems and access essential services. Project FINE assists the acculturation process by connecting newcomers with helpful resources, helping them complete forms and applications, providing information and referral, and reducing obstacles too accessing services. This is made possible by support from the United Way of the Greater Winona Area and private donations. |

| Building Cultural Competency Diversity Training |
|
| Employers and service providers in the Winona County area are seeing an increasingly diverse workforce and client base. It is necessary for them to understand newcomers’ customs, beliefs, work ethic, family life, and geopolitical/economic background in order to maintain a balanced work environment. Project FINE offers Diversity Education Training to address topics associated with this increasing diversity and suggest helpful practices. The training sessions are flexible and designed specifically to match the needs of the agency. |

Children, particularly high school students of immigrant and refugee families as well as newcomers, face challenges of furthering their education without the benefit of the parents' knowledge about college and higher education. College Education Connection first began in 2005-2006, but was not able to continue due to funding. This year, with support from Great Lakes, parents and students will be assisted through the educational sessions in areas such as meeting the high school requirements, applying for college, the importance of taking the ACT and/or SAT tests, higher education choices, and many more. Students will get a chance to compete in the essay contest for a chance to win $1,000 scholarships to a college of their choice. Towards the end of the program, students and their parents will be able experience college life as we visit the three college campuses in Winona. |
