  • Navigating Community Systems

Newcomers with limited English often need assistance to navigate community systems and access essential services. Project FINE assists the acculturation process by connecting newcomers with helpful resources, helping them complete forms and applications, providing information and referral, and reducing obstacles to accessing services. This is made possible by support from the United Way of the Greater Winona Area and private donations.

  • Citizenship Classes
Immigrants and refugees come to the United States to make a home. In collaboration with the United Way and the Winona Community Foundation, Project FINE provides classes for immigrants who are qualified to take the U.S. citizenship examination and who need help in studying for it.

  • Advocacy and Information
To assist newcomers as they seek to become self-sufficient and contributing members of the community, Project FINE connects families to social and government services and helps them in their interactions with schools, healthcare, law enforcement, housing and food assistance providers.

  • Banking Education Classes: Project FINE partners with Winona National Bank to provide banking education to Winona area newcomers with limited English abilities. These classes are designed to teach the newcomers how to navigate the banking system, and learn the benefits of opening checking and saving accounts, building credit and applying for loans.

  • Women’s Health EducationTogether with Winona County health care providers, Project FINE offers health education classes to women with limited English abilities. These classes guarantee that language will not be a barrier to gaining the same knowledge and receiving the same care as native-English speakers. Currently, Project FINE offers childbirth classes for expectant mothers, and cancer awareness and prevention education.

  • Diversity Youth Quest The children in newly arrived families face the extraordinary challenge of growing up without the benefit of parents knowledge about American culture and society. They are vulnerable to negative influences, and need to learn how to make well informed decisions. Diversity Youth Quest focuses on middle school and high school students from diverse backgrounds. It helps them build self-esteem and prepare for a positive future.

  • Diversity Education Employers and service providers in the Winona County area are seeing an increasingly diverse workforce and client base. It is necessary for them to understand newcomers’ customs, beliefs, work ethic, family life, and geopolitical/economic background in order to maintain a balanced work environment. Project FINE offers Diversity Education Training to address topics associated with this increasing diversity and suggest helpful practices. The training sessions are flexible and designed specifically to match the needs of the agency.
