Navigating Community Systems
Newcomers with limited English often need assistance to navigate community systems and access essential services. Project FINE assists the acculturation process by connecting newcomers with helpful resources, helping them complete forms and applications, providing information and referral, and reducing obstacles to accessing services. This is made possible by support from the United Way of the Greater Winona Area and private donations.

Advocacy and Information
To assist newcomers as they seek to become self-sufficient and contributing members of the community, Project FINE connects families to social and government services and helps them in their interactions with schools, healthcare, law enforcement, housing and food assistance providers.

Building Cultural Competency Diversity Training
Employers and service providers in the Winona County area are experiencing an increasingly diverse workforce and client base. It is necessary for them to understand newcomers’ customs, beliefs, work ethic, family life, and geopolitical/economic background in order to maintain a balanced work environment. Project FINE offers Diversity Education Training to address topics associated with this increasing diversity and suggest helpful practices. The training sessions are flexible and designed specifically to match the needs of the agency.

Diversity Youth Quest
This program is designed to help middle and high school youth from immigrant families overcome the challenges of growing up in two cultures.  Adolescence is a challenge for all youth, however language and cultural barriers create additional obstacles for newcomer youth.  Diversity Youth Quest addresses these challenges, particularly mental health and social adjustment issues.  This program is funded through the generous support of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MN Foundation, the Mardag Foundation, and the Winona Community Foundation.

College Education Connection

College Education Connection is a program designed to provide academic support, motivation and access to resources for immigrant youth as they pursue post-secondary education.  This goal is accomplished through monthly sessions for parents and students which focus on general high school and post-secondary information, completing college applications, financial aid, and ACT/SAT application.  This program is funded through the generous support of the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.

Voices in Harmony

The Voices in Harmony program is designed to foster social and cultural interaction between newcomers and provide them with the tools needed to become true participants in the community.   Educational sessions are held based on the needs and interests of newcomers within the community.  In 2010, program sessions focused on Farm Laborer Training for Hispanic Laborers in St. Charles, as well as agricultural education for Hmong gardeners in Winona.

Entrepreneurship Training Sessions will also be offered from October 2011-March 2012, providing participants with information about starting and operating a small business. Individuals will also receive assistance with creating a business and marketing plan.

Digital Inclusion for Immigrants and Refugees

This program is designed to increase the connectivity of immigrants and refugees and build

upon the successful Technology Education for Immigrants and Refugees project,  which provided

basic skills training for newcomers in the City of Winona.  Through this program, education

and resources will be offered to newcomers in the surrounding rural areas, including

educational sessions, access to homecomputers, discounted broadband services, and ongoing

  tutoring services.
