College Education Connection July 2009 - June 2010

The program Coordinator works closely with students at the 3 largest high schools in Winona County - Winona, St. Charles and Lewiston.  The Coordinator spends one day a week at each school, and monthly program sessions are held in two locations - Winona and St. Charles.

During the 2009-2010 program year, 99 students participated in the College Education Connection program.  The program coordinator helps these students keep up with their grades, make plans for post-secondary education, apply for college, register and prepare for the ACT.

Through a partnership with Saint Mary's University, the program was able to provide mentors to program participants.  Mentor groups met on a weekly basis and participated in many activities, including homework help, cooking, hiking, and cultural activities.

The College Education Connection program has had a tremendous positive impact on participants:

  • 93% of seniors involved in the program graduated from high school.
  • 42% of junior and senior participants took the ACT exam.
  • 66% of senior participants applied for college.
  • 60% of those who applied to college were accepted.

Parents have been very involved in the program, with 47 parents attending at least one monthly sesison with their child.

Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation generously supported several scholarships for program participants. Scholarship recipients are:
